A Hunger for Jesus

Don’t mistake my title for some post that’s going to talk about pursuing God and if you’re not hungry for God, “shame on you” or “you’re not a true follower”. This post is not about what you’re doing wrong, it’s about finding true satisfaction in life.

My hunger for Jesus has been insatiable for the past few years but vague in it’s acquisition. At times, inapprehensible. More like, a hunger that cannot be filled. A hunger so intense, it can only be filled with Jesus, Himself.

I saw a movie recently about a women lost in the wilderness with no food or water and she had to fend for each morsel she got. Her quest quickly turned from “someday I’ll get out of here” to “how do I survive, TODAY”.  What a shift in her pursuit! Although, in her peripheral was the civilization she longed to reach, her hunger called for satisfaction in each moment and THAT is where her energies lay.

hun·gry: feeling or displaying the need for food. (ravenous, empty, in need of food, hollow, faint from/with hunger; starving, starved, famished; malnourished, undernourished.

All these words describe what hunger looks and feels like.  I’ve never known what it is like to be truly hungry for food. I’ve always had more than enough. But I have suffered hunger in other areas. Success, riches, health, purpose and relationships. When you feel a deficit, you know it. When you are malnourished in any area, you know it. And in that moment nothing else matters but to satiate that hunger and become FULL. Sometimes, at any cost.

Events in my life over the last few years had left a deficit in many areas. Health, being a big one, relationships and finding purpose and fulfillment in my calling. All these areas were greatly lacking and I ran hard to search for ways to fill up these empty spaces of my life. Really to no avail. I was hungry!  If I could make things work right in these areas then I would be happy and life would be meaningful again. I realized that my hunger ran deeper than those things. Much deeper.

Call Jesus what you will; a crutch, a fable, a myth, a made up character in mindless Christians. But there is no mistaking a hunger for Him. In fact all other hungers in life find their fulfillment in Him alone. Ask anyone who has all the money in the world but they wake up with no sense of purpose. Ask someone who has acquired all the fame in the world but they walk in a constant state of loneliness. We hunger to have what our eyes want, to obtain what we crave and to blow our own horn about who we are and what we’ve done- 1 John 2:16- but these things have nothing to do with God. So suffice it to say, He is not IN THEM. No wonder, when we obtain them, they are empty.

When we become bitter because life has handed us a raw deal or things didn’t work out the way we planned, our hunger manifests in trying harder, making things right or making them go the way WE want them to go. This drives us to selfishness, bitterness and envying the life others have. God is not in this either. But rather, our hunger is satisfied when we surrender, when we yield ourselves to God and practice mercy. The Presence of Jesus is found here.

When I talk about being hungry for Jesus, I’m not talking about seeking an encounter or some kind of supernatural experience with Him now and then. But hungry to know the abiding Presence of his character and nature, to know the glory of God in my life and to experience Christ constantly in my heart and soul. My hunger is constant and unrelenting to know the real Jesus. Not satisfied in pop Christian culture or what or who is trending on Facebook.  Paul said in Philippians 3:8, that he counted all the things he had acquired in this life, a pile of rubbish compared to knowing Christ. I don’t hunger for an image of Him I can make up in my mind, or someone else’s opinion or experience of Him.  But I am hungry to know the Jesus who spoke these words:

“You’re blessed when you’re at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and his rule.

“You’re blessed when you feel you’ve lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you.

“You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are—no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought.

“You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat.

“You’re blessed when you care. At the moment of being ‘care-full,’ you find yourselves cared for.

“You’re blessed when you get your inside world—your mind and heart—put right. Then you can see God in the outside world.

“You’re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That’s when you discover who you really are, and your place in God’s family.

“You’re blessed when your commitment to God provokes persecution. The persecution drives you even deeper into God’s kingdom.

Matthew 5: 3-10 THE MESSAGE

When Jesus said, “abide in me”, He wasn’t talking  about reading our Bible and praying everyday. Although those are very worthy pursuits and bring us to the Truth. I’ve come to understand that He meant to walk where He walked. To live like He lived. To be like minded with Him. To see like Him. To seek His Kingdom first and foremost!!

In Jesus Christ, every hunger is satisfied. In Him, our hearts are filled to the brim with real love, not what the world calls love- oh my gosh so far from the True Love- and peace, -not as the world gives, but as He gives.

I have found that my hunger for Jesus, will not be satisfied by anything this world has to offer, because all my sufficiency, purpose and longing is found in Him only. The Creator. The One Who fills all things with Himself and by Him ALL things are held together. I am complete, only, IN HIM!!!

So if you’re hungry to know justice, guess what? You are hungry for Jesus.

If you’re hungry to know peace and solitude and quite, you are hungry for Jesus.

If you’re hungry to know forgiveness and restoration in your relationships, guess what? You are hungry for Jesus.

If you are hungry to have your past erased and forgiven, then you are hungry for Jesus!

Every longing is found where He is. Every appetite fulfilled in knowing Jesus.

When we are found in Him ALL is satisfied!

Let Christ be glorified in all!!
