Through the valley of the shadow of death
My footsteps you alight
Your rod and staff, my comfort here
You’re Presence my delight

The shadows mock, the darkness jeers
They seek my trust’s demise
Your promise calls to silence them
You’re peace my joy and prize
This is no brief encounter here
Its crucible endures
My breath it keeps the cadence
With my heartbeat as it yearns

Yearns for quiet waters
Yearns to return home
Yearns to be released from grief
That comes with long sojourn
But there is no returning
After the journey here
To anything that was before
Only forward to His reveal

This path is transformation
The task at His great hand
Is my heart in the making
My faith, His to command
To this we’re called, for this, we’re made
Surrender at its work
Lament and tears are mighty here
Where glory finds its worth

Far more to gain from suffering
Is Christ in me revealed
The work His Spirit faithful to
The valley now my friend

Forging, pressing into me
Greatness like His own
His image, the pursuit salvation bears
His cross becomes my home
To lay down all I ever was
To take up life in death
That all He is be found in me
My life forever His
